Together, Caden and I have been attempting to learn one verse a week. Seriously, I thought this whole memorizing verses activity was for him, but my word… it’s been SO good for this Mommy’s soul! Isn’t that how it often works? We set out to bless and teach others, while our hearts are grown, stretched, and refreshed in unimaginable and surprising ways.
As I was walking through a field of fireflies last night, the Lord brought this week’s verse to mind. That still small whisper asked my heart, “So how does this cute little verse apply to your life, Jessica?”
As I walked, His grace slowly brought to mind the many ways that Jesus CAN and SHOULD be my song.
He CAN be…
-The calming SONG when I am overwhelmed.
-The joyful SONG when I am happy.
-The thankful SONG when I am discontent.
-The forgiving SONG when I am angry.
-The peaceful SONG when I am confused.
-The comforting SONG when I am lonely.
-The perfect SONG when I am weak.
-The safe SONG when I am fearful.
-The steady SONG when I am impatient.
-The kind SONG when I am irritated.
-The controlled SONG when I am tempted.
But IS HE?
Are these the songs that come from my mouth?
Are these the songs that play in my head?
Is HE the song I turn to in the midst of my daily circumstances?
Is HE the song I reach for when my feelings are threatening?
What are those other songs that need to be deleted from my mental playlist?
What are those other songs that threaten to drown out HIS song?
Needless to say, my walk last night wasn’t nearly as relaxing as I originally anticipated, but I returned home singing a NEW SONG. Here are some of the lyrics that the Lord brought to mind last night as I rounded the block and headed toward home:
“The sun comes up, it’s a new day dawning
It’s time to sing Your song again
Whatever may pass, and whatever lies before me
Let me be singing when the evening comes
Bless the Lord, O my soul
O my soul
Worship His holy name
Sing like never before
O my soul
I’ll worship Your holy name”
It brought a smile to my heart when I recalled the title of these Matt Redman lyrics, “10,000 Reasons.” Yep, it’s true. I have 10,000 reasons (and more) to sing HIS SONG.
